What tyres for riding on gravel.
« on: November 16, 2015, 01:30:48 »
Booked a B&B for next year.problem is that off road parking is gravel.I used this B&B in june as a stop over. When the time came to leave the following morning I found the wheels had sunk into the gravel, took me and the fella who runs the B&B some time to drag the bike(Triumph Explorer) into a position where I could ride onto the pavement/road.using DL650 for next trip due to not being a over weight elephant.dl needs a new set off rubber and looking at some roadsmarts or would semi offroad tyres do?is there a trick to pushing/riding bikes on gravel

Anakee2 tyres for gravel.

On gravel, ride standing up (or at least putting your weight through the pegs rather than the seat)

Take along a small board or anything that can take the weight of a fully loaded bike, that is larger than the footprint of your side stand. This should help prevent the side stand from sinking into most soft ground surface. Even a compressed beer can will do.

I use roadsmarts on our gravel drive without any issues. As Martin says weight your pegs to put as much weight as poss low down.
To be happy, I don't need private helicopters,a Florida house or a yacht. I'm fine with my motorcycle,a trip to a forest in Bavaria and some lunch money.

Riding tips are well covered already, any tyre that is more suitable on gravel will be a compromise on the road, so choose carefully.

If it's just for one nights parking... a plank under each wheel would be the best bet and pick which ever tyres suit your riding.

Sound advice from all.The plank one will need looking into.Side stand pucks are greatest idea ever but only if you remember to pack one when you go away/or is packed at bottom of panniers. My homer simpson(doh)moment.Tiger 800 last year on campsite in holland, race was on trying to find side stand puck before the stand sank in the soft earth

Anakee 3 front / Battlewing 502 rear on my K6 Wee and Anakee 2 front and rear on my K5 Wee. Don't know why they took the Anakee 2 of the market as it was a good all round tyre. Tyre pressure plays a role.
And a suggestion for VWee, use a tank bag to help eliminate the search for the side-stand fix. Keeps the main items on hand while astride the bike.

Continental TKC70's - job done. Grippy all the way to the pegs in the dry, great in the wet with loads of feel and the don't budge on gravel and general road detritus. Quiet and well mannered too with neutral turn in and good stability through corners  :thumb:
