I just bought my first Vstrom, 2014 650, and ready to replace the Tyres. I've been using Michelen Pilot Roads for years and just received the PR4s. The only front tyre I could find was the PR4 Trail. I assumed it would be fine with the regular PR4 I ordered for the rear, but now I'm not so sure. Has anyone run this combination? Is there a regular PR4 that fits the front?

It's fine. The trail version only has different rubber compounds in different areas.

I have a trail front road rear and my tyre shop, a Michelin dealer, checked their trade site and the combination is fine.
They are brilliant tyres compared to OE and I plan to use again unless my curiosity to try the Roadtec’s gets the better of me.

Perfectly fine, PR4 Trails are a softer version of the normal PR4's.

The PR4 Trail have a different sidewall and bead area construction to make them stiffer and better suited for longer suspension travel bikes like the Stroms and other adventure/tall rounders. The compounds are a slightly different ratio than the regulars, and slightly softer to give the same grip as the standard tyres when in a stiffer carcass. Michelin recommend a matching pair of either Trails or standard, but the front size is only available in trail in 19". There should be no safety concerns in mixing them, and no legal concerns, but best performance will come from a matching set.

Thanks for all the feedback. The Bridgestones looked like they had decent tread left and I really had no complaints, but I just couldn't wait to get back to PRs.

Just fitted a trail front and standard rear to my strom, no trouble. When this rear is done I'll try the trail rear and compare the mileage. Hope you got the 30 quid cash back but It finished on Sept 30th I think.

How do you like the PR4's? I see they have a new version coming in Jan called the Road 5, probably like the old washing powder adds, 'new' and improved... saying that I think I like the tread pattern more.

I like them a lot. Much better wet grip than both sets of Bridgestone's, oe and a40. Dry grip great to and they have a softer sidewall so bumps felt a bit less to. Only down side is rear sits a little higher so turn in faster, made worse with the hyperpro rear spring I have in but as the tyre wears a bit this will disappear.
I seen the new 5's, maybe try it later next year when this 4 is done.

Trail front and road rear...great combination, I have had no issues and lots of grip scratching, wet riding, and touring long distance.
I tried the trail rear, it just wore out too quick to be worth it on the thou.

I've got front and back PR4 Trail, and I wouldn't change them for anything else. Very good tyres for either wet or dry weather.

Anyone seen prices / sizes come up for the new Road 5's yet? Considering how little I intend on going off the tarmac with the 1000 vstrom, and with 2 possible trips into Europe this summer, I'm really tempted to go down the Sport Tourning route. The slightly stiffer side walls and dual compounds are a big plus too for the 5's.

Been quoted £143 by Demon Tweeks for a 150/70 Road 5 Trail inc fitting. Might get it done this week or next. Current PR4's have done almost 8000 miles. Front is good for a few more thou.

Some Michelin dealers are now doing free fitting for Feb and March, worth looking around to see if there's a dealer near you doing the promotion.

Ordered Road 5 trail for my 2015 Vstrom, looking forward to getting a fresh pair of tyres on, the battle wings are 8500miles old and quite squared off.

I do hope hope so. They should arrive today, hopefully get them fitted this week. I'm off to Daventry Suzuki on Friday for an ECU swap, so ideally want the new tyres on for that little ride out.

zipcode, you will be amazed, it's that simple, just get a few miles in to get used to them and let them scrub in a bit.

Well, after a rather mammoth pre season service, upgrade and loads of maintenance carries out on the bike I finally managed to do some miles on the new road 5 Tyres. Totally different feel tot he battle wings, obviously partially because they not squares off lol.... but I've done 10miles of scrubbing in and I can already feel they are confidence inspiring Tyres.

Got a michilen road 5 rear tyre fitted today, standard non trail. The old pilot road 4 standard lasted 5k miles till the wear bars. Lots of life left in the pr4 front yet. Just to get the new wheel bearings fitted and I'm back on the road. If I ever get over the shock of 131 quid for a tyre!
