Clutch Life Span
« on: August 15, 2018, 12:45:42 »
Hi,

Long time since I've posted...

Quick one about clutch life span. Bike is AL2 (2012) 31k and its my daily commuter, oil change every 3k. I'm wondering when might be a good time to get the clutch changed in advance of any issues being known. I'm not feeling any wear but having one just die on me (in a car) I don't want to get stranded or perish the thought have to drive into Manchester if I have no bike.

Ta,

Unless you slip the clutch a lot and go off road, I would expect at least the same mileage again from it. They're pretty easy to get the plates out if you want to measure them, I did so on my old k5 at circ 45k there was hardly any measurable wear.

..and some more...

On SV Forum there's a bloke who works a lot on these 1K engines and I recall him posting similar experiences seeing numerous high mileage  (100K) examples - plates fine. My SV has original plates and I'm @75K+ and they are in still spec. (The basket was changed at 35K to a sharealike and still sweet and vibe-free).

@31K I'd rest easy and save me money - unless it slipping already.

FAIL::: Just saw you have 650. Sure they are still good way beyond 31K though.
If it has two wheels.. I'll ride it.

+1 to what bigpie said, unless you go off road or slip the clutch all the time then I would expect the clutch to last double what it has on now. Like most things, it boils down to how you use them.

Just out of interest gents, have a look at this old thread on VRSI forum...

110,000 k on a 650 clutch

so they don't last forever of course, but exactly as the blokes above have said :thumb:

IIRC Juvecu had a k5 with 110k miles on the original clutch. His did get some offroad abuse.

My k6 was going good until 4th gear disintegrated (little known k5+6 weakness) I had to pull away in 5th a few times to get the bike home. Still would have been fine if the engine were salvageable @60k miles.

Hope not, crazyhorse!

thought it was interesting what the lad on vsri forum said about noticing a masive difference in engine smoothness, rduction in vibes in general etc after his clutch fix. Issues like that can creep up on you
