late DL1000 advice wanted
« on: May 26, 2018, 10:47:19 »
Sold my wee back in feb 15 but still had a daytona up till last december.
Thought I'd done with bikes but I'm finding myself strangely attracted to the late vstrom 1000 circa 2015 or newer. Not sure if I'm going to get one but its a possibility....Anyway the point being is there anything I should wary of on these later models?

The main one that springs to mind is the ECU issues some models have (There's a massive thread on here). Basically, any ending in 00 may cause issues with stalling. Suzuki will replace them to a 02 version but only if you make a fuss with the dealer/contact them. If it were me, I wouldn't buy one without knowing that had been done.
There were also a couple of recalls on earlier versions, earth relocation and waterproof cover for electrics under the tank (IIRC) so worth checking they're done.
Other than that, most owners rate the bikes highly  :thumb:

When you say the 02 version, do you mean the 02 version ecu? If so how do you tell?

It is now a recap, so no fuss anymore, just go to your dealer, you have to expose the ECU, which is under the seat tray, the serial number on the ECU needs the last 3 digits to be 002, not 001 or  000, it's is easy enough to check, but ask the dealer to confirm.
The electrical connector blocks under the tank, on top of the radiator, can corode in time, and are best sprayed with ac50 or such like, and even shrouded with a bit of inner tube over them, just a good precaution if you will be a winter rider.
They are a good sound bike, mine has been ridden hard and done some long trips in bad weather, no issues, if you get a nice one I'm sure you will be content.

Look to see if ECU has been sorted and there was another recall, think it was for wiring under tank as it could rub and short.

I bought a new 2016 model. It's now done over 11,000 miles and has been faultless. I did 500 miles yesterday on Highland roads and if I thought I'd get away with it, I'd do it all again today.  Brilliant bike!!!

I've noticed with all late suzukis, they have the most hideous looking exhausts of any bike. Is it an easy swap to a decent exhaust? Do you need a power commander or such like?
I swapped the silencer on my wee with no mods and although there was no massive power increase , it definitely seemed a lot less wheezy at higher revs.

Straight swap, no tuning needed, it will free the revs up a little, depending on the pipe.

Something else I've noticed is a lack of cruise control which is surprising on a bike of this nature. Is it available as a Suzuki part? if not as an aftermarket accessory?
Thanks for all the replies.

I never bothered about cruise control, the throttle is light enough to let your hand and subconscious take care of that, bit I'm a luddite! lol

Must admit, there has been a few times when I've had to do a motorway slog to get somewhere and most definitely would have liked cruise control.

Need fly by wire for the cruise control.  Think you can get an aaftermarket system OK but Hello its less to go wrong.
If your buyin one make sure the ecu has been done or don't buy. Some of these bikes run OK on the old ecu and some don't.  Mine didn't so believe me you don't want one with the old ecu just in case.
Exhaust is an easy swap, no power commander needed if you leave the header pipes, filter as oe.
I just turned 21k on mine yesterday,  nothing but tyres and oil changes as yet, not been at the dealers from the 500 mile service.
