Source of rags for chain/bike cleaning etc?
« on: May 01, 2018, 21:08:11 »
This might sound like a daft question, but where do you get hold of old disposable rags to use for stuff like cleaning chains and generally working on the bike?   End-of-life cotton bedsheets, shirts etc used to do it when I were a lad, but these days it's all polyester etc and they make crappy rags.   My household certainly produces far fewer rags than I need anyway!   I feel I must be missing something obvious?

I buy a pack of towelling cloths from my local Costco. I think they're about £15 and generally last me about a year.

Buy more fashionable clothes!  lol

Seriously, all old PJ's, T shirts, thin bed linen etc. Polyester isn't very suitable and thank goodness nylon didn't last. I suppose a big family is the answer......... but I'm stopping there.......  :shy:
So how's it going so far then?

Check your local charity shops for stuff they can't sell - I've picked up half decent old towels from them & a few extra quid in their till.

Neighbours washing line!
Just don't touch the undergarments, that's a different offence!

Bin diving a charity shop bin sounds rather desperate! What's wrong with just raiding the neighbour's washing line?

You'd be suprised. I've watched people out back of cancer research in Port Talbot going through the bins after closing on a Sunday.

That may just be Port Talbot for you

I use a two stroke mix and chain cleaning brush from Bike It. Works a treat then chain saw oil to re-oil and a Scottoiler to keep it going.
