Drilled exhaust, can it be repaired?
« on: March 20, 2017, 23:07:48 »
Hello everyone,

I recently bought a 2008 wee with a GPR stainless oval exhaust fitted. For my taste the GPR is way too loud so I'm considering going back to stock. Fortunately the previous owner supplied the original stock exhaust. Unfortunately as I've just discovered he's been a hooligan and drilled though the baffles and cut off the tubular exit section. I haven't yet switched back but I am imagining he's probably ruined it, probably why he purchased a GPR exhaust in replacement  :angry-banghead:

Please take a look at the pics in the links below. Do you think it can be repaired by welding or should I start shopping for a stock replacement? Also if you have any ideas on how to quieten down a GPR exhaust they would also be appreciated.

Can you get a decibel Killer for the GPR?
I have fitted them in the past when the exhaust was too loud.
Many years ago I fitted exhausts to a SV1000 and it was way too loud.
I wouldn't even drive it out of the garage!
Fitted the decibel killers and it made the bike rideable :)
Looking at the drilled standard exhaust, can the outside plate be removed (with the 3 screws)?
If so it will give you access to the drilled ring.
You could get a ring made in stainless steel and get it TIG welded to the drilled one.
It will be slightly thicker but you wouldn't notice it once the end plate is refitted.

Thanks Andy,

I think I already have a "dB killer" installed. Three links below show pictures of it. Never tried the GPR without this installed. Are there any other components/baffles that can be added to quieten it further?

I'm not an expert, but could you pack it with exhaust fibreglass matting stuff before shoving the baffle in?
I keep my GPR baffle in and I love the sound as it is, not too loud at tick over and parts traffic with a quick blip.

If only last baffle was drilled and end cap can be removed then it would be repairable by some welding, either fill in the holes with weld or weld in new baffle. Uneconomical unless you have equipment, skill and time.
