I wish people would stop going on about these bikes. I'm trying to bury my head in the sand and act like they don't exist. Too scared to test ride one or I'd be living in the garage with it.

I have to say that should I win the lottery I'm going to be spoilt for choice. Spoken to two riders of the Tracer and never heard anyone who had no real complaints about a bike. Then there's the Strom, love it to bits, could be tempted to get a new(er) one. But then I run into real trouble. There's the Kwak GTR14, the R1200RT or GS, the K1600GT or even one of the older K or R series (yes, I admit it, I love BMW's). Thank goodness I can't afford any of them unless I do win the lottery!

It's just right on seat height for me. The demo I rode had the seat set at the lowest position and I think I will put it there on my bike too.

I didn't think it's thirsty at all, it was only bad on the fuel when I was nailing it. I was cruising 2 up at ~80 indicated and it was showing about  55mpg at constant throttle on flat road on the soft fuel map. I'd think that with luggage that would drop a little, but for me that's acceptable. There is an indicator that comes on when you're riding economically, I don't know what they consider ECO, but will figure it out later. My old K5 Strom gets 52mpg average and I was fine with that for the past 5 years. After the test ride, and lots of enthusiastic throttle action, the Tracer was showing 50mpg average so in normal use I should get closer to 60. It's great at sitting at 80 in 6th and feeling like it's pootling around unlaboured and effortless.

I was referring to MCN Bike review which quoted 42 mpg and 245 seat height.  I have never seen one up close. If the seat can be lowered and the MCN fuel figures are incorrect   then it does look like a nice bike.

It is a nice bike but with current low prices and 0% it's quite a lot more expensive than the DL so one would expect it to be quite a lot better. I have not ridden the Tracer.  How does it compare to the 650? I'm talking bang for buck here obviously.

It is a very good deal, the Tracer, the competition is more expensive in almost every instance. The build quality also seems very good and, AFAIK, Yamaha is top of the list for reliability.

The engine is more lively than the Glee's and pulls well from the lower RPM range. It is the one thing that stands out more for me than anything else, it's an absolute peach with enough chatacter to know you're on a bike. It's as happy to pootle along as it is to get screamed around. The brakes are ace and it steers like it's mind controlled. Most other bikes I've test ridden always left me with the feeling that I'm missing something that I want even though I didn't know what it was, not the case with the Tracer. Book a test ride and make up your own mind though :)

What's the screen like? From memory, the standard one is quite small (but I might have mis-remembered). The local dealer had one in when they first came out which had a touring screen on it. It was absolution hideous - a basically-formed sheet of perspex, about 1.5 metres high and about 1 metre wide!

Yes I saw that comedy one! I remember thinking perhaps the bike needed the Mickey Mouse version to function efficiently which is a shame because the Tracer looks quite rakish. Money wise, if I was wanting to spend a couple of grand more than the DL, the Yamaha would certainly be in the frame.

I don't think you can trust the MCN fuel figures, they had something ridiculously low for the S10 as well. Have a look on Fuelly for real world fuel figures. The FJ09 is the US name for the tracer, set units to UK for sensible mpg figures:

Now on a Super Tenere having put 64k miles on a 2011 DL650

The stock screen is pretty tall looking even though it's not that high from a rider perspective, but does look a bit cheap on closer inspection. I think if it was slightly thicker it'd be better, it vibrates a bit at high speed, but buffeting is negligible. The stock screen on the Strom is horrendous in terms of buffeting compared to the Tracer one. It might be something I replace, but it doesn't bother me at the moment as my helmet is responsible for more vibration than the screen :)
