Rattle
« on: April 21, 2018, 15:23:31 »
Hello all

I own a 2017 650 Vstrom and am very satisfied with it, but ...

I occasionally hear what sounds like gears crashing together but that's not what it is!
The noise can happen any time or not at all, but it only lasts a few seconds, it happened even whislt idling outside the house.
Sometimes quiet, sometimes loud, but sounds like it's coming from the 'top' of the bike I.e not engine related.
Even bought one of those endescope things for my phone to look in all the akward places one can't see and saw nothing! And didn't know what to look for.

GS Motorcycles have looked at the bike and found nothing loose, still has two years warranty left.

Anyone else have this problem?
Any help appreciated.

Regards
Graeme

Cam chain tensioner sticking, maybe. My friend had that although not on a strom.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

Further to the enquiry.
Heres a picture taken with an endscope on my phone, cost about £6 so excuse the quality.
The white item seems to the float/sender but what is the thing in the middle of the image? Could this be the source of my rattle?

Looks like a pair of spring loaded pliers with red handles to me.Is this taken in the fuel tank? If so try a magnet taped to  a rod or similar,or better still a piece of stiff plastic coated wire that will bend easily.

That would make a right din at times, hook it out and your woes could well be nipped in the bud!

Mine didn’t come with a free pair of pliers.. I feel cheated.!
If that’s what they are, and it looks very much like a pair of circlip  pliers, how the hell did they get to be there.?

With any luck they’ll be SnapOn, and not BlackSpur.

That's mad, if it is a set of pliers, you can get those long bendy grabber things in pound shops, might be able to grab hold of em with one of those but you'll need the filler cap assembly removed to get them out probably. the dealer should really do it for you but I'd be curious enough to want to see what comes out.

It's the auxiliary emergency toolkit, guaranteed not to rust... :fix:

The bike is less than a year old. To your knowledge, has the filler assembly ever been removed? If not, it seems Suzuki have included this freebie before bolting the neck in at the factory,. Unless it's a very small set that could have gone down the filler ( - very unlikely.)

It is rather intriguing as to the origin, it would be great to see a picture of them once removed. :eusa-doh:

Based on the image quality it may be the Loch Ness monster... except it's very small and in your fuel tank. Looking forward to seeing what it really is though.

Not wishing to spoil the fun, but would they rattle submerged in fuel?

Leave it well alone!! It's a primitive tracking device developed by the North Koreans in a bid to gain information on v Strom sales across Europe, removing it could cause a diplomatic nightmare and possible nuclear war!!

Is it out yet?
Is it a pair of pliers?

C'mon the suspense is too much...

I've had another look with the endoscope and comparing what I see to images on the net and it seems to be part of the whole petrol level mechanism. Went for a 80 mile jaunt along the A2 from Larne to Glenarrif and heard nothing. It's really weird that the it's so intermittent and short lived that I'm really grasping at straws. I might just have to take it back to the shop and have them strip it under warranty.
