Cree spots
« on: April 19, 2018, 22:22:57 »
Hello All, just wondered if any one has installed a set of auxiliary spot lights, I've fixed them to the v strom 1000, just tonight, the lights were a full kit comprising harness, on/off switch, 2 lights and fused battery connector as one with the harness. My dilemma is the harness and suitable mounting. am I right in thinking that the harness section comprising the relay with 4 branched wires (hence quite chunky) can be stuffed neatly in a suitable spot beneath the tank and away from heat without the relay being clamped or bolted down? it has an attached metal plate with a mounting hole but I can't fix it somewhere. then is it just a case of locating feed wires through to termination points and try to avoid hot areas and tie wire where I can. I've had hem temporary connected and they look good so far. will keep you posted on final fit and opinion.
Thanks in advance to any help you may have to offer.

Loads of people have fitted auxiliary lights. How many watts are each lamp unit rated at? Fitting a stand alone relay for LED lights is total overkill. If they are say 10 watts each that is a load of 1.6 amps. The switch alone should be rated much higher than that.

Hello the lights come with the harness but must admit its a bit of a faff and the actually on off switch is flimsy with a 3 wire connection which I would like to upgrade. the wire from the relay to the switch is fairly short too but the others are fine hence the question about housing the relay as so far I've tucked it in under part of the main wiring loom on the bike. For your info the lights are 20W each @4000 lumens.

20w leds. They're going to be bright.

According to Amazon mine are 125w, no wonder it's like riding in the day time.

You need a bigpie fuse box. You can run them from one of the outputs on there through a switch. A 4 amp fuse will be fine for 40 watts. My LEDs are 20 watts each too and are wired up in that way.

Tallpaul, If that's for my info I had the dealer fit a relay kit before I bought it.

Hello again thanks for your replies, I'm confused now as to why I need a bigpie if the lights come with a loom with built in relay, inline fuse, on/off switch, fly leads for connection to the lights and battery. I was originally enquiring about housing the relay on the bike somewhere. Are you suggesting I do not use the loom and install a Bigpie.
Regards. M

The loom sounds like the thing you need if wiring in a pair of 55 watt halogen lights (2 x 55 = 110 = just over 9 amps). You could wire the lights straight to your battery through a switch and all will be fine but the only potential problem is that the lights will work even with the ignition switched off. With a bigpie fuse box the lights will switch off with the ignition. Yes, the harness that is supplied will do this too but the bigpie fuse box is a simpler means of connecting the lights to the battery and you will then have two spare fused outlets if you decide to add a Sat Nav and a PD oiler later. Also, unless you are able to alter the cable lengths, a universal loom will have a large amount if wire that you simply don't need and will have to find a home for. I have slight OCD issues when it comes to wiring. The though of a big bundle of excess cable taped up to make it look less gives my therapist nightmares...

that's really helpfull advice thanks and I get what you mean. I too was wondering if the lights with aformentioned loom was the way I want to run them ie straight off the battery and provisinal fit I've done is excess wire on both leads to the lights and not quite as long as I would like to the switch. I will hook them up as temp because I'm off for a weeks tour next week to Scotland so hopefully all will be well then will fit them out as you have suggested. As regards the bigpie have you got a link please for supplier and are they generic or more bike specific.
Your help and advice extremely useful tallpaul. Thank you :)

Bigpie is a user on here! I think he has just one left from his last batch. I'll try and post the link to the thread but send him a private message.

Fuze blocks are good too, but they cost more.
