Change Glee oil filter with oil, or not?
« on: May 14, 2017, 22:02:23 »
I'm taking my DL650 A2 in for its stator recall tomorrow, and thanks to the intel gained form this forum, I am expecting to have the oil replaced as part of the job.  Assuming so, does the panel reckon I should ask them to swap the filter (ie, at my expense) while they're at it?

The bike was registered in September 2013, and I've owned it since September 2016; it's covered 7,500 miles.  The oil filter is supposed to be changed after 600 miles, and then at 11,000 miles/36 months, whichever's soonest.  Obviously it's well past the 36 month mark - does it  really need changing?  Or is the 11,000 mile mark really the more significant?   Thoughts please?

(I haven't a clue what a new filter costs so in the unlikely event that it's not at a lot, obviously it wouldn't be worth scrimping)

I had mine changed in January this year for the £12 or whatever it cost. I had changed the old one in July 16, but always figure new, oil new filter. Normally you can change every second service without issue.

It's important to change the filter the first time. That's when machining swarf from the original build gets cleaned out. After that, I'd be fine with changing it every year or every 10,000 miles, whichever comes first. I did it every second oil change when I was doing over 10,000 miles a year. A new filter is not included with the recall.

Might as well get it done now and then it's good until next year.
I install a new filter everytime I change the oil but in the past it was every 2nd oil change like the others have said.

Leave it.
They may or may not do a full oil change, do the next oil change a bit earlier with the filter to make sure you get rid of any dirt/muck/dust/gasket remains/sealant that will inevitably find it's way in there.

That's what I did but it probably won't make any difference either way.

If it's never been changed, change it. Otherwise it's good as is.

Well I only saw the first 3 replies, as the job got done today!   Anyway, I decided to go with a new filter - as it was £13 it wasn't really worth overthinking it. Thanks for the advice, all
