"High" in Switzerland
« on: August 07, 2017, 16:34:20 »
Took a week off with the missus on 15th to 23rd July 2017 to escape civilization and some of everyday luxuries (like having a shower daily) and went to the Alps in Switzerland (mostly camping + hiking / light climbing). Overpacked the V-Strom and rode from London to Dijon on the first day, followed by Dijon to Turtmann Valley in Switzerland second day. Mostly took boring motorways and fast roads to get there as soon as we could. The idea was to escape crowded places so there are no amazing mountain passes but still some great scenery. Managed to ascent the Bishorn peak (4153m).

P.S. Second video is not riding, just us in the mountains (and witness a helicopter rescue of some ignorant German couple that got stuck surrounded by crevasses)

Love Switzerland.  We went over new year just gone and went up jungfraujoch, highest mountain in the alps at around 11700 feet .

Indeed, beautiful and expensive! We minimised the costs by carrying our own house (tent) and food for most of the days. The weather was amazing as well  :sunny: When got back to UK, we got welcomed by the usual miserable pouring rain and stationary M25: took us 1h to do 15 miles  :dl_smiley_banghead: (could not filter with so much luggage on the bike).

Great videos, Switzerland is such a nice place to ride a bike.

Why did you change from your phone to your Tom Tom ? Probably because the phone isn't waterproof I reckon, but do you prefer the phone if it's dry ?

Yes, it started to rain a bit so switched to satnav. I prefer my phone as it has a newer Tom Tom app with an up to date map and also live traffic. My  Tom Tom Satnav is more than 5 years old...still works but the routes are better on the phone. Just ordered a waterproof case for phone that allows charghing so I don't have to carry my old satnav anymore. I was also looking at Tom Tom 450 but I don't think I want to spend £350 for that when I have the same app on the phone for £15 a year.

I see thanks. Yes new Tom Tom's are expensive, my V5 is a couple of years old now but it allegedly has 'lifetime mapping' so we'll see how long I can keep it for.

I once tried my phone in a waterproof case but couldn't see the screen very well, probably my bad eyesight though.

Thanks again for posting up your videos.

Great post.
How did you find the 650 2 up with luggage ?
Enough poke out of the uphill hairpins ?

Better than expected to be honest. The fuel consumption dropped quite a bit on the way up (and on the French motorway) but not too bad. I had quite a bit of luggage plus the missus...also I found braking slightly harder than normal. Bur overall was good...impressed with the bike.
