Wee engine cuts out when bike tilted on to side stand
« on: July 17, 2018, 11:05:51 »
Hello my fellow Strommers,

I have a issue with the wifes Wee. Long story short, I had to change the rectifier as the battery wasn't charging. Anyway all good in that department now. When I put the bike back together, she was on the centre stand and started fine (and was charging the battery). So when I moved her off the centre stand onto the sidestand the engine would cut out after a couple of seconds and the FI light came on the dash. I tried starting her again and the bike would crank over but not fire. So I put her back on centre stand and Hello presto she fired up again?? While she was on the centre stand I moved the sidestand up and down and left it in the down position for a couple of minutes, she ran fine?? So back on to sidestand and she cut out after a few seconds??

Have I moved the dropped bike engine cutout device by accident?? I wouldn't know where it is or what it looks like?

If anybody has any ideas it would be much appreciated

Dinger

It's possible you've dislodged the tilt sensor, its designed to cut the fuel when activated. It is located on a plastic locating tab just behind the battery (easily dislodged if removing battery).
it will look like the pic attached. Make sure the side that says UP is facing Up

Pug27, you de man.  :thumb:

Thank you so much for the quick reply. The sensor had been dislodged from mounting point and just tucked in at an angle. That has just made my day, I thought I was going to have to go to the dealer and get the code read.

Glad to hear it was an easy fix. Are you heading to Whitby on Saturday?

It's possible you've dislodged the tilt sensor

Brilliant reply Pug

You are able to read the F1 code without taking it in to a dealer, by placing your bike in dealer mode. The process is explained: https://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,10831.0.html

:bow-blue: Sorry blokes, email account has been at 100% full. So it has not been sending new emails to my mobile telling me of more responses to my thread?? I thought it a bit strange that I had no new emails for over a week. Trouble is they don't tell you on your mobile account, it was only when I logged in on my PC I found it was maxed out  :dl_smiley_banghead:

Anyway TP sorry mate I couldn't make Whitby  :bawl:

Gert thank you for the link  :thumb:

Dear Everyone....I had the same problem when I put the side stand down and it wasn't fully down....Hello floor !....lift the bike up and it did not start.
Clutch in, neutral and the start button was dead ! after all the checks the dealer recovered it and said that when they hit the floor they break a wire in the loom controlling the start up !
£225 later all was well, .....was I had ? or is it another common fault ?...Bob
I have a 2009 DL650.

I haven't heard of dropping a bike from its stand breaking a wire in the loom, though I have experienced a wire breaking in the loom. Either you were unucky and had the latter & dropping it manifested the issue [better stationary than on the A1 with no hard shoulder like me] or...

Was the dealer using "smoke and mirrors" to explain a damaged clutch a switch or side stand switch?

So why a complete new loom. Why not splice the broken wire and heat-shrink the new joints? Something don't add up!
