Parallel scratches on the forks...
« on: July 17, 2018, 19:08:03 »
I might be over paranoid but I noticed thin scratch lines appearing on the forks. I had the fork seals and dust seals replaced about 2-3 weeks ago and I just wondered maybe there is something isn’t quite right there.

Any ideas suggestions what could cause this? It is appearing on both forks and it doesn’t wipe off so it is a scratch for sure.

A photo would help, if you can post one.   :thumb:

Thanks for that.

If you scratch across the lines with your fingernail can you feel them?

Thank you for the quick reply Paul,

I have tried but it doesn't seem deep enough to feel it with my fingernails.

I hope this is a good sign :D

If it was a deep scratch you would feel it and yes it would be an issue. Due to the fact that they slide up and down and you are in a non sterile environment (I.e. out on the road) then there will be marks on there. If some grit became trapped behind the dust cover it could Mark the stanchion, so prise it off and give it a clean. If you notice it getting worse then it could point to a deeper issue. Hopefully someone like kwackboy can give an opinion. He's a pro and will see stiff like this all time. He may be able to give better advice.

I have the same thing after changing seals can't see any oil but it's strange as they were all put back the same way they came apart

That looks fine to me. It'll be the new seals rubbing tighter against the forks.

Hello , the markings look like the shims below the seals may need replacing
Did you notice what the stantions look like before the seals were changed ?,  as this might be the reason why you had to replace the them in the first place.

However, the markings are not that bad but may shorten the life of the new seals through

Had to edit what I said as my original was wrote in a hurry .

They looked like new on mine but now after seal change slight marking. The only part that runs up and down on the stantions are the oil seal and dust seal so can't see what would be causing this problem ?.

@Botond: Quote "I had the fork seals and dust seals replaced about 2-3 weeks ago". Take it back to the party that did your fork seals and have them sort it out!! New seals would not clause this, unless something was not addressed correctly. Let them investigate and give a reason as to what the cause and the solution is.

The only part that runs up and down on the stantions are the oil seal and dust seal

There are metal bushes that guide the movement of the slider over the stanchion as well. If they are damaged or gritty then they will cause the scoring.

Thank you for all the replies! I will go back to the garage tomorrow and ask them to sort it out! This is why I prefer doing my own service so at least I know what I did.

Usually when I get fork seals replaced it is because one of them was leaking. My Tech has always advocated replacement bushing also with the seals. Nothing ever goes back together exactly as before so it may well be that the old bushings or the fork legs are in a different place in relation to each other and are now imposing different wear patterns on each other.
