I found this at http://pinlockusa.net/FAQ

What does “Day Time Use Only” mean?
If you look at your helmet shield, it is marked with “VESC-8”. This refers to a United States Standard for light transmittance for a single pane visor/shield. All Visors/shields must meet certain standards, one of which is the transmittance of light.

The requirement for motorcyclists’ eye protection is found in Section 7 of the Vehicle Equipment Safety Commission’s regulation VESC-8 adopted in 1971 and amended in 1980:
Section 7. Light Transmittance of Eye Protection Devices (EPD)
7.1 CLEAR – A clear EPD is a device which transmits not less than 85% of the incident visible radiation.
7.2 TINTED – A tinted EPD is a device which transmits less than 85% of the incident visible radiation but not less than 20%.
7.2.1 A tinted EPD shall not impair the wearer’s ability to discern color.
7.2.2 A tinted EPD shall not be used at night.

A shield may have less than 85% transmittance as long as it is not less than 20% and does not impair the ability to discern color. Any shield that transmits less than 85% cannot be used at night and can only be used during the day time.

Most shields/visors have a 90 – 91% light transmittance. When you combine the shield/visor with another shield/visor or in our case with a Pinlock lens, the light transmittance will be reduced. The combination of the Pinlock lens and shield will have a light transmittance range from over 20 % to a little over 80%. Therefore, the requirement to place “Day Time Use Only” on the lens. Pinlock does not impede the wearer’s ability to discern color.

the main problem with pinlock when dark are light reflections.
And those depend on the shape of the visor.
I have a Shoei xr1100 with pinlock and a shark s600 with pinlock. The Shoei is a mess in the night for reflections and is marked day time use only, the s600 is better and there is no indication day time use only. Probably they say the truth..

Try SHIFT-it anti mist spray at £2.50 & it lasts per bottle I've found.

Pinlocks restrict vision and are not for use at night ie after 4pm in winter.

I've got some of this shift it stuff. And doesn't make the slightest bit of difference. probably worse to be honest

What helmet you using? just wondering if its prone to misting- the vents on some helmets ain't as good as others.

I fitted a Shoei breath guard to my Raid 2. But when you get stuck in traffic and the air-flow isn't happening, I have to crack open the visor. Not ideal if its raining...

If you can't get results from the Shift-it anti-fog I wonder if they've changed the formula?

I have an S900 and an XR1100 and the Shoei is by far superior in all respects. Fit , comfort, weight, visibility and ventilation. The visibility is better both laterally and vertically and is very noticeable when changing helmets.

The S900 has absolutely NO ventilation. Add in no pinlock and riding in the cold is a misty affair.

I fitted a generic pinlock but the visor is smaller than the Shoei and the pinlock cuts across my vision.

The S900 is also rather weighty. The only plus it has is it's quieter thsn the Shoei.

I found this on another forum-pistonheads.

I wouldn't recommend my helmet for cold weather riding either- but its obsolete anyway!

My s900 came with a pinlock! And is spot on in the cold weather with the pinlock in. Its just that shift it doesn't do anything.

I would say a misted up single visor is more of a risk than an unmisted pinlock at night! Everything is relative. My 4 year old Shoei XR1100 gets condensation now and then - tightening the pegs usually does the trick. My Spada pinlock suffered a snapped pin after 2 years. You get what you pay for I suppose.
