Battery not charging
« on: July 15, 2018, 21:11:04 »
Hi everyone, My bike is a 2009 DL650 ABS with 20,000 miles on it. Last week I went out for a ride and my ABS light came on, Clocks went off and bike cut out. Put battery on a optimate charger and red light came on wouldn't charge. Put a new battery on which was fully charged problem solved so I thought, Went back out did about 6 miles ABS light came on clocks went off and bike cut out. Looking at other previous posts on here I thought it's going to be the stator. These are the tests I've done so far.

Battery test: Fully charged 12.74 v started bike 11.97v left on tickover for 2 minutes 11.93v  3000 revs 11.88v engine off 12.45v

Stator test: Resistance on all 3 coils 0.4 0hms.Tested all three coils to ground none are going to ground. AC output at 5000 revs 76 v on all 3 coils.

R/R Diode test: + to + = 0 0 0   + to - = 564  564  564   - to - = 0 0 0    - to + = 564  564  564.

I disconnected the connector coming from the R/R to the battery to test the output from the R/R  and it was showing 1.7 v on tickover.
I've checked the connectors and wires from the stator to the R/R  and from the R/R to the battery for continuity and all are OK, Checked all the earth wires back to battery all OK, Checked earth strap from battery to engine OK, Checked all fuses and connectors to battery all OK. I don't have any add-ons running off my battery it's as stock.
Even though the the battery is new and the optimizer didn't  pick anything up could the battery be the problem. Is there anything I have missed any advice would be much appreciated as I have now run out of options.

Initially sounds like the R/R is the problem. If you've got 76V coming from the stator and only 1.7 going to the battery then it looks like the R/R is faulty as it it should be around 13V even it tickover. This is confirmed by the fact that the battery voltage drops when the bike is running because it's on it's own powering the ignition, fuelling system and lights with no help from the generator. It then returns to normal when the ignition is switched off. Can you borrow a R/R from someone to confirm this or have a friendly dealer(?) to check yours under load conditions.

Hi , From your tests I'd say the regulator.

Hello and thanks for your replies, I thought it might be the regulator but wasn't  sure as it passed the diode test, I did notice that after running the bike a few minutes the regulator was really hot for the short time the engine was running. I don't  know of anyone who I can borrow one off to try it so I might have to buy one and see. Again thanks for your replies they're much appreciated.

I had to replace the regulator I went for the cheap one from M&P, it only lasted 800 miles so I sent it back and they sent me a new more expensive one. I also did a rewire mod from the R/R back to the battery as the old one was putting 18v back to the battery, and it's working fine now.  :thumb:

I'm finding it hard to find one, I've seen a few for the 2002 to 2006 models and and 2011 onwards. I put the details in online for mine, I need one for a 2009 dl 650A (ABS). M&P have a 2007 one and a 2011 one but said none of these would fit mine. It looks like they only did mine in the 2007 to 2010 ABS versions, When I did an online search for mine it said mine is compatible with the GSXR 600/750 2006 to 2011, GSXR1000 2005 to 2012, and the GSF1250 2007 to 2010 if that's the case I've seen lots of these for sale. M&P as most of these in stock and said it's the same rectifier that fits them all but said there's no mention on the packaging that it will fit mine so I'm none the wiser.

Just a suggestion. Try searching ebay for the part number. They may be listed under a different model if Suzuki used the same part on different bikes.

Thanks for replies, I looked on the links you sent me Gert and couldn't see any regulator rectifiers,  I've done a serial number search online and nothing of any significance came back. I've seen an article online saying they changed the stator on on the 2008 to 2011 models and also the regulators. I've seen a 2011 abs one, So might order that.

Fowlers list the part number as 32800-47H00-000 for £213.92 in stock for 2007-2011 DL650s (replaces part no 32800-41G10-000 . They also say the Bandit 1250 2007-11, GSF650 2005-11 and a few other bikes use the same part

Thanks for the links blokes, that's narrowed it down a lot. What gets me is they supposedly changed them in 2007-2008 but yet you see some advertised saying they fit models 2002 to 2007 some to fit 2002 to 2012  some fit 2007 to 2012 and so on. I think I'll go with the Chinese model, one fits all for £16.00 I can't go wrong lol. I'm going to order this one tomorrow.https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Suzuki-DL650-V-Strom-ABS-2011-Replacement-Regulator-Rectifier-Unit/132056339554?hash=item1ebf2bd462:g:DRkAAOSwWaRZrmmr

I would advise not going with The Chinese ones, as said before, you will buy more problems than you will solve, you do need a good quality one or you can end up with other problems you don't want.... :fix:

£70 and it "meets or exceeds original specifications". That's in the blurb from the link. I'd go for that. The £16 one sounds a bit nob though.

Have a look at this site https://www.motorcyclespareparts.eu/en/Suzuki-parts/3280047h00

As mentioned in an earlier post, your part 3280041G10 has been replaced by 3280047H00 and so have many others. The current version is used on 35 models between 2005 and 2017, so there ought to be one out there somewhere.

Using the first link from those listed in my reply #7, (https://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/oem-schematic/11 then selected electrical K8/9) I found the rectifier item 5 listed as 32800-47H00 (replaces part # 32800-41G10). That supports the reply from AlanT

Hi all, thanks for your replies,  Thanks Gert for pointing that out I need to wear my glasses more, I was only Joking about ordering the Chinese one, I ordered one today from M&P for £69 with a 12 month warranty, They've sold lots for the GSXR 600 and 750s which are same as mine. Thanks Alan T for that link,  wish I'd  have waited now. I'll let you know the outcome when I fit it, Fingers crossed.
